Rajashree Choudhury Talks Yoga Therapy
For the first time, Bikram Yoga Burlington welcomes Rajashree Choudhury for a very special event on Sunday April 7th. Rajashree will lead us through a traditional Bikram Yoga class followed by a Q&A on yoga therapy and yoga philosophy. In a separate session, available to all Bikram certified teachers and interested students, Rajashree will deliver a lecture on the Bikram Yoga Pregnancy series.

At the urging of her parents, Rajashree began her yoga practice when she was four years-old. She is a five-time winner of the National Indian Yoga Championship from 1979 to 1983. By age 11, Rajashree won several titles. This experience shaped her life dream of encouraging youth to practice yoga. Born in Kolkata, living in Los Angeles since age 19, Rajashree Choudhury’s background is a true blend of the East and West.

To promote yoga-asana as a sport, Rajashree founded the United States Yoga Federation and the International Yoga Sports Federation. Because of Rajashree’s efforts, the International Yoga Asana Championships is now in it’s tenth year.

Rajashree believes that introducing yoga at an early age helps ameliorate and avoid problems that arise as one journeys through life. With a special focus on the emotional side of yoga, Rajashree advocates yoga’s impact on not only physical health, but also the mind, body and soul. 

Rajashree has a degree in yoga therpay and is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She travels worldwide to conduct seminars and workshops, host yoga retreats and spread personal development. Inspired by her personal teachers, Dr. P. S. Das and Dr. Kushala Das, as well other great teachers such as B. K. S. Iyengar and Paramahansa Yogananda, Rajashree is led by her heart and motivated by the transformations yoga brings.

In1994, Rajashree co-founded Bikram Yoga’s Teacher Training program, and continues teaching heated hatha yoga..

Why did you begin Bikram Yoga and what benefits have you seen?

To feel healthy, build strength and endurance, and to challenge myself with a new routine that requires a lot of mental focus…I feel healthy, and I’ve built strength and endurance. I also find that I’m much better balanced, mentally and physically, both on and off the mat.

What life changes have you experience since you started practicing? Because of this yoga, I feel fit and well-prepared in my activities outside the studio. I love to hike and ski, and this yoga gives me the confidence to take on and enjoy more interesting hiking terrain, and remote ski adventures. My husband and I spent a week skiing in Yellowstone National Park last winter (nearest civilization was 30 miles away), and I don’t feel I could have done that comfortably, without the strength I’ve built from this yoga practice. We hiked the highest peak in New York last summer, and I don’t believe I could have done that without endurance I’ve gained through my regular yoga practice.

Favorite Posture?

Standing head-to-knee. So challenging for me! The teachers are patient in helping me, which gives me confidence, and allows me to improve a lot.

Least Favorite Posture?

Pranayama breathing. I never feel ready for this posture, since it comes first in the series. Also, it feels like this posture has a huge responsibility, since I expect so much from it. The breathing needs to transport my mind from the real day-to-day world, into that meditative yoga world. It feels as if the first set brings me to the bottom of a super-high wall, and in the second set, I need to climb up and over the wall, into the yoga world, where the rest of the postures of the series are waiting for me.

How did you discover Bikram?

I used to belong to a yoga flow studio, and I heard other students talk about Bikram. It sounded interesting to me, so I thought I’d give it a try, and it stuck!
